PETITION: Stop Criminalizing Unhoused Residents in Our Nation’s Capital

September 20, 2021 by

According to the Washington D.C. Department of Human Services, the number of chronically unsheltered people in the city rose from 1,337 last year to 1,618 this year, a 21% increase, with over 5,000 people experiencing homelessness at some point.

Brightbeam activist Maurice Cook and the mutual aid focused non-profit Serve Your City along with a coalition of other local organizations and D.C. residents are advocating on behalf of the city’s unsheltered residents and demanding that Office of the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services halt their planned evictions of encampments for people experiencing homelessness and cancel plans to create “no-tent zones.”
