As a district, Minneapolis Public Schools does not have an established curriculum or any existing standard mandating the teaching of LGBTQ+ history. This negatively affects all queer students and our city’s community as a whole. When students don’t see themselves represented in their education, they tend to check out during class. Including LGBTQ+ history in our schools will engage students while allowing them to see themselves represented in the curriculum. Our schools and their surrounding communities will benefit from more young people actively participating in learning and valuing their education.
The Social Studies Department of MPS must mandate the teaching of LGBTQ+ history at all grade levels as a standard in our schools. Minneapolis Public Schools’ curriculum should include historical figures of diverse genders, racial backgrounds, and socio-economic status. It should include lessons on figures from across multiple time periods and should show that LGBTQ+ history doesn’t exist only for itself or other queer people, but actually impacts our entire global community.
We the undersigned call on the MPS Social Studies Department and the Minneapolis School Board to implement a standard mandating the teaching of LGBTQ+ history and utilize a LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum in all MPS schools that address these issues.
